What Is a VPN and How Does It Change Your IP Address?
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is one of the most misunderstood security tools out there - part of the confusion comes from aggressive marketing by VPN providers, who sometimes promise more than they deliver. Here's what it actually does.
How it works, technically
When you turn on a VPN, all of your device's traffic travels through an encrypted tunnel to a server operated by the VPN provider, somewhere in the world. From the perspective of any website you visit, the traffic appears to come from that server - not from your real IP address. That means websites see the VPN server's IP and location, not yours.
What it actually hides
- Your real IP address - no longer visible to the sites you visit; they see the VPN server's IP instead.
- Your approximate location - IP-based geolocation now shows the server's location, not yours.
- Your traffic, from your ISP's view - your internet provider can see you're connecting to a VPN, but can no longer see which sites you visit inside the encrypted tunnel.
What it doesn't hide (common myths)
- It doesn't make you fully anonymous. The VPN provider itself can see your traffic - which is why a clear "no-logs" policy and the provider's reputation matter so much.
- It doesn't protect against cookies or fingerprinting. Websites can still recognize you through other means (a logged-in account, cookies, browser fingerprinting).
- It doesn't make you immune to malware or phishing. A VPN encrypts your traffic; it doesn't filter dangerous content.
How to check that it's working
The simplest test: check your IP address before and after turning on the VPN using our IP lookup tool. If the location and provider shown change (say, from your city to a server in another country), the VPN is working correctly. If they stay the same, something isn't configured right.
When a VPN actually makes sense
Unsecured public Wi-Fi (airports, cafés), accessing content only available in other countries, or simply not wanting to expose your real IP address to every site you visit - these are all reasonable reasons. You don't need one for ordinary browsing at home, but it doesn't hurt either, as long as you pick a trustworthy provider.
